RHYL YOUTH CAFE

Youth Café is open Monday to Thursday evenings from 6pm until 9.30pm (6 until 8.30 during winter nights). The young people of Rhyl run the Café themselves. It provides a safe supportive environment for young people to meet new friends, become aware of their community and get involved in community projects. Over 360 members have signed up and have used the Café since open.

The café provides free access to computers and the internet, Playstation2's, Xbox’s, quiz's, information, TV’s/videos/DVD/Sky, table tennis, Nintendo Wii, board games, darts, pool, foozball, music, Bowling, Trips away, cheap healthy food and free fruit to all users. There are also parties and theme nights such as meet your assembly member, NSPCC, Childrens Commisioner for Wales, poetry, Girls night, training nights and ongoing signposting to other youth groups. The members of the group also operate a be-friending scheme where young people that are new to the area can be linked with other local young people and mentors.
The café has a regular attendance of around 15 to 35 young people per night who, while enjoying the environment and getting off the streets, are also participating in informal education, whether in I.T. skills, working with others or general social skills. There is also a concerted effort to build on teamwork and negotiating skills, by setting small tasks such as the visitors/members deciding on time limits and democratic rules for sharing of facilities.
